AFP-NH Stands with Senator Morse in Opposition to 15 Cent Gas Tax Increase
WINDHAM – Americans For Prosperity (AFP) New Hampshire is announcing their opposition to the House Public Works and Highways Committee vote to move forward with a 15-cent gasoline tax increase.
“Gasoline prices are at record highs and yet the House’s insatiable need for more revenue trumps what is in the best interest of the hard working families in this state,” said Corey R. Lewandowski, State Director of Americans for Prosperity-New Hampshire. “The War on Energy Consumers must come to an end. From filling up their tanks to heating their homes and turning on their lights, NH families are paying enough in energy bills. They deserve to keep more of their paychecks, not less.”
HB 617, as amended by the Committee today, will increase the state’s gasoline tax by fifteen cents per gallon. The Committee voted to approve the increase 17-0. Senate Finance Committee Chairman, Chuck Morse (R-Salem) has said the increase will not pass the Senate.
“We stand with Senator Morse in his opposition to this additional burden the House insists on placing upon NH families,” added Lewandowski. “Senator Morse understands that increasing gas prices will not only make it more difficult for people to fill up their own tanks but the increased costs will be absorbed into everything that needs transported and then passed along to NH consumers a second time.”

You CAN'T figure it out? They're democrats. It's what they do. It's the reward for all of the idiot liberals who voted them in. What did you think was going to happen? They tax and spend. It's always the same thing with the dems. In the next election, we have one statement to make, "STOP PISSING AWAY OUR MONEY!!!" Votes their dem asses out and send them back to Massachusetts where they came from.

History has long shown that Democrats are more-responsible stewards of the public good than are Republicans.
The Federal Budget tends towards balance or even surplus when Democrats are in control; it trends wildly toward deficits when Republicans are in control.
Democrats are willing to pay for maintenance and repairs, even to the point of levying the necessary taxes or floating the necessary bonds to see the jobs done. Republicans, by comparison, defer maintenance and hope things don't fall down until the Democrats are back in charge. The result is events such as the I-35W bridge collapse and the lives that cost.

So yes, that's what Democrats do: the tough work of keeping things running, even in the face of Republicans routinely blowing things up.

I think that blind support of the modern day union is a far cry from being good stewards for the public.
It is merely being in the their pocket and ignoring the needs of John and Jane Q. Public

No Straw man, I just have never witnessed anything to the contrary. I can find plenty of legislation but not one that anti-Union that is supported by Democrats.
Most currently, NH majority support by NH residents (70+%) and it was voted down...more of the same

I have no problem with a gas tax. We need to expand I-93, it's an outdated and dangerous stretch of road. The gas tax would be something we'd all be paying into, rather than a toll booth in certain areas. 93 benefits the entire state, the gas tax has the broadest ability to collect the revenues we need. We haven't touched the gas tax in over 20+ years, we would still have the lowest gas tax in the region regardless!
I'm not blind to the price of gas these days, but where exactly do the residents of this state expect to get the money to pay for the highway? I think you'll find a majority of residents understand the need for this highway expansion and see the gas tax as the best way to fund it.
I could give a rats behind that some outside organization is against the gas tax. If by far and large NH residents don't like it, that's the voice I'll listen to. I'll also be interested to hear where people think this highway funding is going to come from, if not a gas tax. The prospects of a toll booth won't bring us the finds we need, so what else are we going to tap?!? Think it through people, that's all I ask! This Isn't window dressing, this highway is the life blood of the states economy.

Why is AFP advocating for worse roads, unrepaired bridges and higher costs for average families? Why are they playing politics with basic government services?
The gas tax goes to road maintanence and repair.
Keeping the gas tax at the current level will simply downshift costs to individual vehicle owners, who are already paying $323 annually in car repairs due to the deteriorating condition of our roads.

I really don't know if fifteen cents is needed or not. But in principle, because unlike most taxes, the gas tax constitutionally can only go into roads, I support such taxes if they are needed. And building 93 as well as many other projects are needed. Basically the people who use the roads, pay for them. And you can not get any fairer than that to me.

@Jeff Hatch To the extent that anyone dips into the gas tax they are in violation of Part Two, section 6a of the New Hampshire Constitution. I do not know what the remedy is.

There's plenty of money for highway and bridge repair - all it would take is cutting some of the pork and fluff in the budget and redirecting those funds. But the democrats prefer to spend, spend, spend..........doesn't matter on what as long as it involves higher taxers and more spending.
Scott-NH
6:44 pm on Thursday, February 21, 2013
Thats easy to say, Isn't it?!? Now, I have to ask, where is that pork, what revenues are we using to fund it and how do we get legislative action to get it redirected? Rather than platitudes, lets use specific examples to try and make sure the states revenues are spent wisely.

I have found nothing that shows NH has dipped into the revenues from "the motor fuel tax" for anything unrelated to the highway fund. In fact, I found an in depth article that picks apart and shows where and how NH makes it revenues and how they are spent: [dated 2010]

To: Atlant and the Dems:
So you think that Democrats are better stewards on the economy – really? As former Democrat I can say that your modern day Democratic Party pays no resemblance to the party of Jack, Bobbie and Martin in which I grew up and loved. Over the years the Democratic Party:
• Never met a loony, left wing cause that they couldn’t support.
• Never met a tax hike they didn’t like or proposed (like a gas tax).
• Can’t provide a balanced budget unless forced too. When is your patron saint of obstructionism, Harry Reid going to work on the federal budget? It’s only been four-years since we’ve had one which by the way is against federal law. But then again you Dems consider yourselves immune from scrutiny and abiding to the law. What’s there about breaking federal law that you people don’t understand?
• Could care less about debt and deficit.
• Consistently lie about raising taxes on the middle class.
Before you spout off your obviously embedded ideological rant, get your facts straight. It is the Democratic Party that has the track record for raising taxes. It always has and always will - it’s in your deformed gene pool!
