Cecile Richards: Romney 'Stuck in the 1950s'

The Planned Parenthood Action Fund president came through Derry on Oct. 23.

Cecile Richards has traveled a lot this October, delivering the message to voters around the country that President Obama is the man in this election who cares about women's issues.

The president of the Planned Parenthood Action Fund slammed GOP candidate Mitt Romney at a phone bank visit in Derry on Oct. 23, saying that he is "stuck in the 1950s" regarding his positions on equal pay for women along with women's health.

"President Obama has spoken a lot about women's health issues, about his support of women making their own private medical decisions, she said. "Mr. Romney on the other hand has simply said these issues aren't important, and they're not issues that he's going to deal with."

Richards praised CNN news anchor Candy Crowley, who moderated the second presidential debate, for raising women's health issues.

During her visit, Richards briefly spent time on the phone calling local voters. She spoke to one Obama supporter, who she referred to as "grateful" for the call.

"All the work that people are doing to have conversations with voters, apart from the TV ads and all of the sort of mail and all that, is really important," Richards said.

Richards also spent five minutes talking to the phone bank volunteers about the stakes of the upcoming election.

"Here in New Hampshire you really know (the stakes for women), because we face in New Hampshire the effort to completely end services of Planned Parenthood," she said. "That's what this U.S. Congress has done, (and) frankly that's what Mitt Romney has pledged to do as well."

Richards also spent time speaking to Obama field offices in Nashua and Salem. She also spoke in Hartford, CT alongside Sen. Jeanne Shaheen, D-NH, earlier in the day.

Richards introduced Obama at a rally held in Virginia at George Mason University at the beginning of the month, an experience she likened to introducing The Beatles given the 10,000 people who were in attendance.
