Nashua Rallies For Obama
The President was the main attraction, but how sweet it was having singer James Taylor along for the ride.
An estimated 8,500 Obama supporters fleshed out the grassy knoll in front of Elm Street School Saturday for a stop by President Obama.
That number, provided by Nashua Fire Marshal Cynthia Bautista, could make this the largest political rally in New Hampshire history, beating Oprah/Obama in 2007, according to WMUR political analyst James Pindell.
Justin Kates, Nashua's Director of Emergency Management said another 400 were turned away at the gate once the space was to capacity.
Those who made it in got a reprieve from the usual canned musical campaign fare – opening for Obama was singer/songwriter James Taylor, who the Obama thanked for "hitting the campaign trail hard" over the past few months.
Taylor arrived on stage about 1 p.m. and played a series of his better known songs, with just a little banter in between.
Just before 2 p.m. Obama took the stage and, in about 20 minutes, made his best pitch to Granite Staters for their support on Election Day.
"Ten days, New Hampshire," Obama said to the crowd, doing the Election Day math, as he hit all his salient points, building to a crescendo of campaign promises that included his commitment to women, the elderly, preserving Social Security, and moving the country forward.
"We need to build on policies helping us to make progress all over the country," Obama said, adding that citizens don't need policies that are "reckless and wrong" we but rather "steady and strong."
"You can vote for policies that will turn back the clock 50 years for immigrants and women and gays or in this election you can stand up for that basic principle enshrined in our founding documents," Obama said.
"No matter who you are, no matter where you come from, you can make it in America," Obama said. "New Hampshire, we've been through tough times before and we are tough. We always come out on top... our destiny isn't written for us it's written by us."
Obama talked about the progress made in the past four years.
"The unemployement rate is falling, manufacturing is coming back to our shores, our assembly lines are humming again, housing prices are starting to pick up... we've got a lot of work to do, but New Hampshire, the country has gone to far for us to turn back now," Obama said.
Mitt Romney's campaign issues a response almost immediately following the rally.
“Today’s desperate attacks are laughable coming from a President whose only plan for a second term is to recycle the failed policies of the last four years while raising taxes by $2 trillion," said Ryan Williams, a campaign spokesman.
"As governor, Mitt Romney worked with Democrats to close a $3 billion deficit, balance four budgets while cutting taxes 19 times, create tens of thousands of new jobs, and lower the Massachusetts unemployment rate to 4.7%. President Obama is the only candidate in this race who has raised taxes on America’s middle class. As president, Mitt Romney will bring real change to Washington. His pro-growth agenda will strengthen the middle class, add 12 million new jobs, and finally deliver a real recovery,” Williams said.
The city finally settled on Elm Street for the rally after several other more obvious venues, including Stellos and Holman stadiums, and Greeley Park, were ruled out for various reasons.
In two days the city mapped out a logistical plan that included road closures and a way to ease the potential parking crunch by organizing shuttle buses from two locations.
Still, many opted to park in non-sanctioned local parking lots which were filling up hours before Obama's arrival, and several tow trucks were spotted circling for – and removing – violators.
At least three hours before the 2 p.m. rally, a long line snaked its way from Elm Street down to Main Street. However, once the line started moving, before noon, people were able to find limited space on bleachers and ample standing room.
Shuttles were waiting on Main Street to return people back to the parking locations. Traffic following the rally continued to be heavy in the downtown.
"Everything went smooth from our end," said First Student shuttle bus driver Jimmy Davis, who got the call Friday afternoon that 20 drivers were needed for the event.
He was happy for the overtime.
"Traffic was a little bit of a problem, but overall, I'd say things went about as good as they could have gone," Davis said.

The 2012 Nelson A. Rockefeller Center poll found that 55.1% of the NH voters support same-sex marriage, 30.9% oppose it. A May 2012 Public Policy Polling survey found that 57% of NH voters thought that same-sex marriage should be legal, while 35% thought it should be illegal and 8% were not sure. A separate question on the same survey found that 85% of NH respondents supported legal recognition of same-sex couples, with 54% supporting same-sex marriage and 31% supporting civil unions, while only 13% thought that there should be no legal recognition and 2% were not sure. The UNH Survey Center poll, conducted between August 1 and August 12, 2012, found that 61% of NH voters were against repealing same-sex marriage, 28% were for.

Right. The majority of citizens support gay marriage according to the polls so the issue should be dropped, but those that support gay marriage do not want an actual vote...
This issue has been voted on 30+ times in the United States; has the Supreme Court found any of these vote unconstitutional?
"Marriage" is defined in constitutions of 37 states as one man and one woman. I guess the other 13 states' founders as well as those that founded the country did not see the need to define a word that is commonly understood. To me, civil unions are fine, but "marriage" has a specific meaning and is not an evolving paradigm. Let's vote and see who agrees..

Good comment, Carol. Also, Massachusetts is a slam dunk democratic state. There are simply more opportunities to see President Obama here in NH. Additionally, where they have volunteers working in all 50 states to help all the campaigns, we get many out of state people just before the election who come specifically to canvass in New Hampshire. They're already here. The border is 7 miles away. They're democrats and Americans who want to see their president.

Holly,
I spent quite a while "working the crowd" to urge them to oppose the three New Hampshire constitutional questions and it was clear that the crowd was a mix of New Hampshire folks and Massachusetts folks. I'd *GUESS* one-third Mass and two thirds New Hampshire but I wasn't keeping track.
That's fine; because there's no race in Massachusetts, if Mass folks want to see President Obama up close, then we're their best opportunity.
It would be interesting to conduct the same experiment at the Romney event; I'll bet there will be damned few folks from Massachusetts who have any interet in seeing Romney; they're mostly happy to see the back of Mitt.

4.7% unemployment sounds good, TODAY, however, when you compare it to other states at the same time you see it for what is was, less than stellar. You can't compare that economy to this economy, nice try. And his balancing of the budget was done like they just did to us in Concord, he downshifted costs to cities and towns. Concord's cuts over the past two years have meant that local taxpayers had to make up the $26 million dollars that got downshifted to Nashua. And the state of MA has a law that the budget HAS to be balanced.

The hemorrhaging of 800,000 jobs/month has long since been reversed and we're gaining jobs. The housing market is stabilizing.
And *ANOTHER* reason that the next four years are going to be better in the past four years is that we're going to kick out a bunch of Republican obstructionists in the federal government clearing the way for representatives who will actually work in the American interest of the American people instead of the interests of the Republican Party.

Markets are artificically up due to QE X - QE Infinity. Pumping paper into the economy will ultimately result in a liquidity bubble, in which I predict will burst in q1-q2 next year. We are already seeing he early warning signs of enterprises, in financial services, manufacturing, raw materials, retail, and transportation all missing forecasts.
You are all witnessing major companies, in the last 60 days, announce major layoff announcements. Just today, UBS announced 10,00 forecasted layoffs.
Enterprises are positioning themselves to brace for the next bubble, in this case created by Obama and the Fed. Obama just does not understand that creating a cheaper supply will not bring us out of this near-recession (2.0 GDP last quarter is piss-poor and im sure it will be revised downward once the election is over). Creating demand is what has not been tested in the last 4 years. And that cannot be artificial, as Obama has tried and failed:
Cash for clunkers - people would have bought cars anyways, they just bought it sooner
The housing market is not stabilized. New home growth is predominantly apartments as the demand for SFH and condo's are at historic lows. Apartment buildings are the growth these days.
Cash for fridges - same thing.
Stimulus - Green policy investment cronyism failure across the board. One new story every week it seems

Why did Obama do that? So please don't BS the people that real dollars were not taken away from Medicare. "The unemployement rate is falling."
It finally went down to 7.8%, after almost 4 years over 8%. Of course, that's because millions of people have given up on finding work. Further, our unemployment rate has consistently been, and still is, much higher even than the "bad" scenario Obama had painted as what would happen in the absence of his stimulus bill. So By Obama's own standards he's a failure. As Bill Clinton said in 2010: “We found a big hole that we did not dig. We didn’t get it filled in 21 months, but at least we quit digging. Give us two more years. If it doesn’t work, vote us out.” So by Clinton's standards also, Obama is a failure who should be voted out.

And GM, Chrysler, and the suppliers that feed into them are still alive.

David Pittelli

1) A strawman. Of course every job has something to do with it, but we have fewer employed people than when Obama took over, and if we had the same labor force participation rate as we had then the unemployment rate would be 11%.
2) Oil production on the federal lands (over which Obama has significant control) is down. It is up on state and private lands due to nothing Obama has done, but rather improved drilling technology and higher oil prices.
David Pittelli
11:31 am on Sunday, October 28, 2012
3) I don't accept your premise that the Obama bailout saved the American auto industry. Even apart from the fact that at current stock prices we're underwater about $25 billion on GM alone, the bailout of the auto industry was a disaster. Bankruptcy by executive fiat may be faster than normal (and legal and Constitutional) bankruptcy by a judge, but when the executive arbitrarily decides that hourly workers making much higher wages than anywhere else in the industry, shouldn't have to give back anything on wages, he has not improved the firms' long-term viability, he has reduced it. And when the executive arbitrarily gives the UAW, the union that backed him, hundreds of millions more than their share, while screwing the 20,000 nonunion employees of Delphi, that is corruption. And when the executive further decides to screw the senior bond holders, contrary to the contractual terms under which they lent the money, that is both contrary to law and highly damaging to all corporations needing debt financing, as no one is eager to lend money to firms knowing that debt contracts are now less important than which union donates time and money to the President. Expanding this lawless and corrupt form of bankruptcy and crony capitalism, which President Obama apparently wants to do, will inevitably lead to a long-term decline of what is left of our economy.

In fact why did they throw them on the ground anyway. I thought that THEY were the ones who cared about pollution! As far as the ones who cheered...I find that most of Obama's supporters are supporting him for what THEY can get from him, not what he does for the country. Did you know that two of the agents died from mortar fire 6 hours and 20 minutes into the attack after trying to fight them off on their own? Did you know that there were drones feeding video of the entire attack back to the white house situation room, and they had the coordinates of the mortar launchers and yet did nothing? Just wondering if you approve of the way our military heroes were treated.

I have a question for you in return: When George W. Lorna Andoscia
6:48 pm on Sunday, October 28, 2012
First of all Obama is not running against George Bush. However since you brought it up, there is a big difference between the 2 9/11 attacks. George Bush did not have info as to where the attack was to take place or when the attack would take place. Obama knew where his men were being killed, that they were under mortar fire, where the launchers were and watched it all in real time. There is a difference of not having enough info to act, and having the info but refusing to send in the support they needed. And, my info comes from the emails and paperwork involved...something most news networks for some reason aren't doing much reporting on. You'll know the truth...when it's too late. Hopefully there are enough people out there who know how to google!
Atlant Schmidt
7:20 pm on Sunday, October 28, 2012
Bush's information was quite precise as to method and reasonably precise as to time.
Yet he did not act.

It has already been reported that there was not enough time to get troops there before the attack ended. If you have sources and references that you want to share, by all means. If you think Obama is sitting in the White House watching Americans die on his TV and doing nothing because, why? How does that scenario play out in your head?
Turn off Fox news, present your references here, or you will just be labeled another partisan trying to score points off of dead Americans.
Joe

@ForThePeople - Of course Obama was just "not sitting in the White House watching Americans die...", he was in Las Vegas (sin city) attending a fund raiser! Lorna Andoscia
8:09 am on Monday, October 29, 2012
I hate defending Bush because I really don't think he did a good job as President. However, I have to ask, what was he supposed to do? Shut down all airports nationwide? For how long? How long would it have taken to put in place the screening measures necessary to protect us? Suddenly the American people would have to be body searched to provide safety. Pre 9/11 the people would have had his head over it! Not to mention the effect on the nation being basically shut down for an extended period of time. Or maybe he could have put all people from middle east countries on a no fly list? Yeah right...there would have been cries of racism. The main difference is that this time the President DID know exactly what was going on. One drone was already in the area and was sending back video immediately. Another drone was sent in. There was military support 2 hours away. It took 6 hrs. and 20 minutes before the mortar fire killed 2 of the heroes that went to the embassy and rescued the survivors! They drove through gunfire and grenades to get to the annex a few blocks away. Why was no help sent as they begged for it?
I AM NOT politicizing this. I am pointing out a major flaw in the capability of a Presidential candidate to handle an emergency situation. I don't care which party he is in when it comes to this! And, political party should not matter to anyone on this matter. This is bigger than politics. This is about how we support our troops under fire!

Romney would cut FEMA funding......
Lorna Andoscia
10:42 am on Monday, October 29, 2012
Nooo...He wants to streamline FEMA and make it more effective by putting it in the hands of the States. Here's what he said:
Q: You've been a chief executive of a state. I was just in communities dealing with tornadoes & flooding. FEMA is about to run out of money, and some people say, maybe we're learning a lesson here that the states should take on more of this role?
A: Every time you have an occasion to take something from the federal government and send it back to the states, that's the right direction. And if you can go even further and send it back to the private sector, that's even better.
Instead of thinking in the federal budget, what we should cut--we should ask ourselves the opposite question. What should we keep? We should take all of what we're doing at the federal level and say, what are the things we're doing that we don't have to do? And those things we've got to stop doing, because we're borrowing $1.6 trillion more this year than we're taking in.
FEMA is going broke!!! By returning it to the states, where they know exactly where the money needs to be spent efficiently, he would be saving disaster relief for the future. Why does everyone think that just because the Federal Government won't be running a program that the program will no longer exist at a state level? It's the same thing with the education. So much money is wasted by the Fed. government running it. Romney wants to give the money to the states, plus cost of living increase, plus 1%.
Mike Healey
10:49 am on Monday, October 29, 2012

Lorna Andoscia
11:00 am on Monday, October 29, 2012
It IS immoral to inefficiently spend money through a system full of federal red tape, rather than streamlining it by letting the states decide what is best for them and where the money is best spent. Not only is an inefficient, nearly broke system not able to provide as much assistance, but we are wasting money that our children will have to pay for. Before you get all uppity...the aid provided is not wasted. It's the money needlessly spent as it trickles down to the states that is wasted.

Wow, you just troll the Patches spreading this manure, don't you. Nixon wasn't 'removed', he quit- chickened out because couldn't face the consequences of his actions. You pick & choose what looks 'bad' to you as if you trained at the feet of Rove and Cheney. You're not even good at it, much like those 3rd rate burglars. Obama is asking for 4 more years- not exactly ducking responsibility. Right or wrong, good or bad, he's standing by his convictions.
Even without Watergate, Nixon's not exactly a shining example of Republican virtues... smallminded, mean, petty, and lacking in any redeeming Presidential features. Secret recordings, illegal expansion into Laos and Cambodia, and the 1973 oil crisis. Sure, he went to China... opening the door to modernizing and engaging what has now become our biggest rival on the world stage. Once a triumph, much like every other Republican venture, it's come back around to bite us in the ass. Had they stayed isolated another decade or two, who's to say that their version of Communism wouldn't have splintered and democratized like the Soviet Union? Instead, it remains a monolithic culture dominated by political hacks with connections and money... which, now that I phrase it that way, scares me even more about the path the so-called conservatives want to take us down.
