Tupelo Announces Five New Shows

The Smithereens will play two shows at the Londonderry music hall later this year.

We have FIVE new shows to announce this week!

August 8 NEW RIDERS of the PURPLE SAGE: The New Riders of the Purple Sage, signed to Columbia Records by Clive Davis, released its eponymous first album in September 1971 to widespread acclaim. In the next 11 years the band toured and released over 12 albums, selling over 4 million records. NRPS began as a part-time spin-off from the Grateful Dead when Jerry Garcia (pedal steel guitar), Phil Lesh (bass) and Mickey Hart (drums) teamed up with John Dawson (guitar, vocals) and David Nelson (guitar). Although early live appearances were viewed as an informal warm-up to the main attraction, the group quickly established an independent identity through the strength of Dawson's original songs. By 1970 Dave Torbert had replaced Lesh, and Spencer Dryden, formerly of Jefferson Airplane, had joined as the group's permanent drummer. Garcia remained in both The Dead and The New Riders until he found himself overcommitted, at which time Buddy Cage replaced him and the classic NRPS lineup was born.

September 12 DAVID WILCOX: Cleveland-born David Wilcox was inspired to play guitar after hearing a fellow college student playing in a stairwell. His lyrical insight is matched by a smooth baritone voice, virtuosic guitar chops, and creative open tunings, giving him a range and tenderness rare in folk music. He released an independent album in 1987, was a winner of the prestigious Kerrville Folk Festival New Folk award in 1988, and by 1989 he had signed with A&M Records. His first release on the label, ‘How Did You Find Me Here’, sold over 100,000 copies the first year largely by word of mouth. Now, 17 albums into a career marked by personal revelation and wildly loyal fans, David continues to find and deliver joy, inspiration, and invention. Considered a 'songwriter's songwriter', his songs have been covered by artists such as k.d. lang and many others. In addition to his writing prowess, his skills as a performer and storyteller are unmatched. He holds audiences rapt with nothing more than a single guitar, thoroughly written songs, a fearless ability to mine the depths of human emotions of joy, sorrow and everything in between, and all tempered by a quick and wry wit.

September 29 SETH GLIER and ANTJE DUVEKOT: Singer-songwriter and Grammy nominee Seth Glier knows the challenges of emerging into adulthood all too well. Over the course of just a few short years, Glier has gone from opening act to headlining his own shows as well as major folk festivals, all culminating in a nod from the Grammys® this year for the work he did on his sophomore record, The Next Right Thing. Having spent the majority of his teens and early twenties on the road, the now 24-year-old Massachusetts native describes his new album Things I Should Let You Know as "a reckoning with adulthood.” Antje Duvekot is a German-born, American-raised singer-songwriter who has risen to the top of the competitive Boston singer-songwriter scene. Look for her new release coming February "the near demise of the high wire dancer."

November 15 and 16 THE SMITHEREENS: Brandishing heavy guitars and an unabashed fetish for British Invasion Pop, The Smithereens carved their niche on album rock radio and earned a reputation as a great concert attraction with sizzling pop songs including "A Girl Like You," "Only A Memory" and "Yesterday Girl."
