Longtime Londonderry Resident Dies at 52

Jean L. Scanlon, 52, of Londonderry, died July 7, 2013, at Parkland Medical Center in Derry.

She was born in Lowell, Mass., July 3, 1961, to the late R. Jean and Albert H. Avery. She was a resident of Londonderry for 23 years and graduated from Pinkerton Academy in Derry in 1979. She was a longtime methods engineer for Teledyne Printed Circuit Technology in Hudson, a defense electronics manufacturing firm. An avid outdoorswoman, she loved animals and rescued as many as she could. She enjoyed dog sports and riding horses, and she rescued two off-track Thoroughbreds from Suffolk Downs in Boston, Mass. She also enjoyed fishing, gardening, going to yard sales and craft shows with her sister and spending time with her granddaughter. She will be remembered as a bright, independent woman, who was full of life and cherished her family.

She is survived by her daughter, Samantha J. Homan of Manchester; her sisters, Gale E. Avery of Goffstown and Dawn A. Brander of Auburn; her brothers, Ralph C. Avery of Bath, Richard A. Avery of Indian Rocks Beach, Fla., and Skip Avery of Keene; her granddaughter, Avery C. Homan of Manchester; as well as several nieces and nephews.

Following cremation, calling hours will be held on Saturday, July 13, from noon to 2 p.m. at Peabody Funeral Homes and Crematorium, 15 Birch Street, Derry. A funeral service will follow at 2 p.m. in the funeral home. She will be laid to rest at White Island Light on White Island in the Isles of Shoals. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to The Communication Alliance to Network Thoroughbred Ex-Racehorses, CANTER New England, PO Box 3, Westborough, MA 01581.
