WWII Vet Dies at 93

The funeral service will be held on Tuesday at Peabody Funeral Homes in Derry.

Leonel G. “Pikey” Piper, 93, of Derry, NH passed away on Thursday, August 8, 2013 at the Elliot Hospital, Manchester, NH surrounded by his loving family. He was born on January 9, 1920 in Portsmouth, NH a son of the late Alonzo and Marguerite (Tuttle) Piper. Leonel proudly served his country during WWII with the US Navy as a Flight Engineer. He worked at New England Telephone Company for 15 years as an HVAC technician, retiring in 1984. He was a member of the Pittsburg Ridge Runners Snowmobile Club and spent time grooming the trails in Pittsburg. He and his wife Priscilla bought a home in Derry in 1942, his daughter bought the house and in 2009 Leonel moved back and spent his final years in the home where his family was started.

He is survived by one daughter, Allura Becker and her husband Richard of Derry, one son, George Piper and his wife Candace of Pottsboro, TX, eight grandchildren, four great grandchildren. He was predeceased by his beloved wife Priscilla (Tewksbury) Piper, one son, Alan W. Piper and his two brothers, Charles and Clyde Piper.

Calling hours will be on Tuesday, August 13, 2013 from 10 – 11am with a service at 11am in the Peabody Funeral Homes and Crematorium, 15 Birch Street, Derry. Burial will be on Wednesday August 14th at 11:00am in Lake Cemetery, Route 3, Pittsburg, NH. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Pittsburg Ridge Runners Snowmobile Club, 17 Dickson Lane, Pittsburg, NH 03592.
