2 Teens Suffer Life-Threatening Injuries in New Year's Eve Crash

Their car hit a tree on Gulf Road around 10:30 p.m. Tuesday.

Two teens suffered life-threatening injuries and a third was injured in a crash in Derry on New Year's Eve.

Emergency personnel were called to Gulf Road at Hampshire Drive at 10:33 p.m. on Dec. 31 for a report of a serious motor vehicle accident with multiple patients and entrapment. Upon arrival, crews found one car that had hit a tree at a high rate of speed, resulting in massive front end damage to the vehicle.

The 17-year-old male driver and a 16-year-old female who was in the back seat suffered life-threatening injuries and were trapped in the vehicle. The third patient, a 17-year-old male, suffered only minor injuries. The Derry Fire Department said the driver was not wearing a seatbelt.

Crews used multiple hydraulic rescue tools and were able to rapidly extricate both patients from the vehicle in less than 10 minutes. Once extricated, the patients were moved to the ambulance, where three firefighter-paramedics and two firefighter-EMTs were assigned to each patient.

Two medical helicopters also responded to the scene, landing at the intersection of Route 111 and Island Pond Road.

The driver was taken by DHART helicopter to Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston. The female passenger was taken by Boston Medflight to Tufts Medical Center in Boston. The third patient was taken by ambulance to Parkland Medical Center in Derry.

Salem and Derry police also responded to the scene, and the Londonderry Fire Department provided station coverage.

The accident remains under investigation by the Derry Police Department.
