'Mandela's Legacy Will Live On'

New Hampshire officials react to the news of the former South African president's death at the age of 95.

News of Nelson Mandela's death spread quickly on Thursday night, and New Hampshire politicians were quick to react.

U.S. Sen. Jeanne Shaheen (D-NH) said "the world lost a remarkable leader," with Mandela's passing at the age of 95.

"Because of his lifelong commitment to freedom and equality, the world is a better place," she added. "I’m saddened by his passing but know that his legacy will live on and continue to inspire future generations."

U.S. Sen. Kelly Ayotte issued the following statement via Twitter:

"Nelson Mandela’s extraordinary crusade against apartheid lifted up his countrymen & inspired the world. His passion for human rights lives on"

U.S. Rep. Carol Shea-Porter (D-NH) said "the world grieves with South Africa" over the death of the country's former president and anti-apartheid crusader.

"Nelson Mandela was a great leader who chose peace over violence, and love and forgiveness over hate and revenge," she said. "His power sprang from this, and from his humility.

"The world will be a little emptier now, but we must strive to keep his legacy alive for the living."

U.S. Rep. Annie Kuster (D-NH) called Mandela one of the world's "most inspiring champions for freedom, equality and peace.

"Nelson Mandela’s life is a story of courage in the face of adversity; forgiveness in the face of injustice; and reconciliation in the face of oppression," she said. "His commitment to the causes of freedom and non-violence helped free a nation and inspire the world. And while he is no longer with us, Nelson Mandela’s legacy will forever inspire us to work toward a better and brighter future."

Gov. Maggie Hassan issued the following statement:

"The world will dearly miss Nelson Mandela, a true champion for humanity. His legacy and inspiration will live on, but now is a sad moment for all who love and work for equality. I join the people of New Hampshire in sending our thoughts and prayers to the nation of South Africa and all who have been inspired by his fearless leadership."

President Obama has issued a proclamation ordering the lowering of flags on all public buildings and grounds to half-staff immediately and until sunset on Monday in honor of Mandela's death.
