Londonderry Market Basket Employees Getting Behind CEO

We caught up with Londonderry Market Basket employees outside of the store Tuesday as they petitioned customers to support CEO Arthur T. Demoulas.

Kelsey Kurto, a four-year employee and Windham resident, spoke about the opportunities that the company has afforded her as a 20-year-old college student.

Kurto attends Assumption College, but makes money at the supermarket while on vacations.

Market Basket has granted her scholarship opportunities and will be a likely source of future internship and job recommendations.

Kurto was joined outside by fellow employee Kathy Defalco, a 56-year-old Derry resident. Defalco has worked at the company for three years.

Her twins, a son and daughter, have also worked at the Londonderry location since they were 14.

Defalco said she has been granted opportunities at Market Basket despite being disabled due to her tripping and falling on the job.

Behind the two women were signs posted on the wall reading "In Artie T We Trust" and "Save Artie T."

The battle of the heirs of the Market Basket chain appears to be coming to a head this week as one side of the family battles for control over one of New England’s most successful grocery chains, according to the Lowell Sun.

The board of directors is scheduled to meet July 17 to vote to oust Demoulas, a son of one of the founders, who has been in control of the company since 2008. The fight is being led by Arthur S. Demoulas, the cousin of the CEO, who is also a son of one of the founders.
