Customers Help Detain Derry Purse Snatcher

Bethany Menton is now facing a felony theft charge.

A Derry woman was arrested Sunday in Manchester after attempting to steal a purse from a customer at Hannaford.

Around 1:40 p.m. Sunday, police responded to the Hannaford at 201 John Devine Drive in Manchester for a report of a purse snatching. Upon arrival, they found several people detaining a woman in the parking lot. Located under a nearby vehicle, police recovered a purse reportedly taken from another woman inside the store.

The suspect, Bethany Menton, 26, of Derry was arrested and charged with felony theft due to the fact that she had two prior convictions for theft in February of 2013.

According to the 34-year-old victim, she had been at the deli counter when she observed Menton take her purse from the shopping carriage. She chased after Menton and with the assistance of fellow customers was able to detain her outside the store.
